Chardham Yatra Overview

Chardham Yatra is one of the most sacred pilgrimage journeys in India. It includes visiting four holy shrines nestled in the Garhwal Himalayas of Uttarakhand – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. Each dham holds immense spiritual value and is dedicated to different Hindu deities.

The yatra not only cleanses the soul but also brings a deep connection with nature. Snow-clad mountains, gushing rivers, and ancient temples make the journey unforgettable. Every year, lakhs of devotees undertake this sacred circuit between April/May to October/November.

This spiritual expedition is more than a religious tour. It is a life-changing experience where faith meets adventure. Whether you are a spiritual seeker or a mountain lover, the Chardham Yatra 2025 is a must-do journey.

Why is the Chardham Yatra Important?

The Chardham Yatra holds great religious importance in Hinduism. It is believed that completing this yatra washes away sins and leads to moksha (salvation). Here's why it's special:

  • Yamunotri – the origin of River Yamuna and home to Goddess Yamuna.

  • Gangotri – the source of River Ganga and seat of Goddess Ganga.

  • Kedarnath – one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and Panch Kedar of Lord Shiva.

  • Badrinath – dedicated to Lord Vishnu, part of the Char Dham of India.

Visiting all four dhams in one journey is known as the Chardham Yatra and is highly sacred.

Trek Leader Siddharth recalls,

“The first time I did the Chardham Yatra, it wasn’t just a journey—it was a calling. Walking through ancient paths, listening to the sound of temple bells echoing in the mountains, and watching rivers like the Ganga and Yamuna flowing from their sacred origins—it gave me goosebumps. The energy in those high-altitude temples is something you feel in your soul. I had never felt more alive and at peace at the same time.”

Where is Chardham Located?

All four dhams lie in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand:

  • Yamunotri – in Uttarkashi district (altitude: 3,293 m)

  • Gangotri – also in Uttarkashi (altitude: 3,100 m)

  • Kedarnath – in Rudraprayag district (altitude: 3,583 m)

  • Badrinath – in Chamoli district (altitude: 3,133 m)

The journey usually begins from Haridwar, Rishikesh, or Dehradun, and follows a clockwise route (Yamunotri → Gangotri → Kedarnath → Badrinath).

Best Time to Visit Chardham

The best time for Chardham Yatra is between May and June and again from September to mid-November. The shrines remain closed during winter due to heavy snowfall.

Month Weather Condition
May-June Pleasant, cold nights
July-Aug Rainy and risky
Sept-Oct Clear skies, best views
Nov-April Shrines closed

Avoid the monsoon season due to landslides and roadblocks.
